The Throat of the River
2025-2026
I'm honored to be included in Charles River Composition, 48 photographers who participated in a year-long collaborative project conceived and led by Lisa McCarty. From the spring equinox of 2025 to the spring equinox of 2026, we explored the Charles River across its 308-mile journey, creating a collective portrait of a single river through diverse photographic perspectives.
During my mother’s final year, I photographed Hemlock Gorge and Echo Bridge along the Charles River. As I counted each breath by the movement of her throat, I began imagining this
stretch of river as a living body, a place of swallowing and constriction, of voice and echo. Influenced by nineteenth-century Pictorialist photographycontemporary to the shaping of this
landscape, these circular reflections of sky on water become meditations on motion, memory, breath, and passage.
